Good use of snipers

To me this is a under-used unit of CM's list.
He is costly, fragile, hard to manage and his survival is uncertain but he can however reverse a battle's tendency.


HIS OBJECTIVES

No sentimentality, the sniper shot the head ! His targets' heads and those of the units facing him.
The man dislikes the officers, in particular those mounted on a tank.
This is his main function : shot the ennemy Tanks' chiefs. A tank without a chief is deaf, blind, slow and clumsy. To cut a long story short it is an easy prey for your own tanks or anti-tanks.
In defence, before counter-attacking with your tanks, it is still reassuring to know that your opponent's ones have been weakened by your sniper. By all means the unharmed tanks' chiefs will have bolt their turret... what give more or less the same result.

Some people use snipers to counter the « Kubel Taktik » (see the "gamey" rubric) but it's a waste.
If there is no Tank chief in sight, preferably target artillery's spotters or headquarters (the "infantery" unit who is generally just behind four others).
The sniper can also be used to scout and protect an ambushed AT... to know more about it, have a look to the subject created by Tigre on the use of AT.
Add that the sniper can also be used to patrol... but that's the subject of another rubric.


HIS WAYS AND MEANS


His rifle and furtivity are sniper's only weapons.
The rifle has a 600meters range but 300-400m look like a most realistic distance to go into action.
His ammunitions are often between 10 and 15, so you must select his targets.
To be sneaky is the main bedrock and the key of his survival.
A sniper lurks in woods or building, often on a high place to widen his range of vision. He will take advantage of the building's protection or of the hillside to hide his line of retreat.
A sniper runs away : he mustn't fire more than one turn (it is enough to shot one or two officers) before changing his hideout, even if he seems undetected... it will be done at the next turn !
Avoid at all cost that your sniper retreats under fire... a single bullet can terminate him.
A dead sniper is always the one that fired once too much (General Custer).
As he fires a few bullets, he must be precise. Consequently a sniper must be crack. OK it's costly but less than a novice sniper that will freak out at his first action.
